Sperm whale spotted off Boca Grande Pass Saturday

A 30 to 50-foot Sperm Whale was spotted by a fisherman about three miles out in the Gulf of Mexico west of Boca Grande Pass Saturday.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Communications office received a call Saturday afternoon from a woman whose husband was fishing about three miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the Boca Grande Pass. She told Dispatch that her husband called her to report seeing a large whale.

Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota was contacted.

Because it was a 911 call, the sheriff's office said the name of the caller could not be released.
