A fire caused minimal damage to attic insulation in a unit behind the office at the Boca Grande Club at 5000 Gasparilla Road on Monday, June 8.

Lt. Lee Cooper from the Boca Grande Fire Department was already on the scene, trimming trees to allow access to the property by emergency vehicles, when he detected the smell of smoke.

The unit, Cooper said, was undergoing a remodeling project by contractors. Heat traveled by conduction along pipes being soddered, up the wall and caught some of the insulation in the attic on fire.

Cooper said the engine was called and workers helped put out the fire which was quickly extinguished with minimal damage to the insulation only and no structural damage.

"It was a luck of the draw kind of thing that I was already there," Cooper said this week. "I was able to mitigate the situation quickly. It was one of those situations where it could easily have gotten out of hand."

The Boca Grande Fire Department also responded to one Rescue and Emergency Medical Service call, one lockout and one public service call for the week ending June 14.
