Brian Luis Arce, 32, of 2511 Luther Rd., Port Charlotte, was honored by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office for assisting injured officer Ryan White Oct. 25 after he was was hurt trying to recapture an escaped prisoner. Sheriff Mike Cameron presented Arce with a special "Outstanding Citizen Award" plaque at the agency's third-quarter awards special luncheon Nov. 4 at Portofino Waterfront Dining in Charlotte Harbor. "Brian Arce demonstrated outstanding citizenship and bravery in assisting DFC White," Cameron said. Deputies were called when a man sideswiped a car and then crashed into a wooded area near Rotonda Circle and Cape Haze Drive. Brandon Wesley Flynn, 28, Placida, was located, handcuffed and put in a cruiser to be taken to the County Jail. Arce was in his vehicle alongside DFC White's patrol car at U.S. 41 and S.R. 776 when he saw Flynn smash out the patrol car window and run from White who radioed for assistance, gave chase, sprained his ankle and fell. Flynn ran to Arce's car and asked for a ride. Arce declined and chased Flynn, tackled and held him until backup deputies arrived and took him into custody. While in the back of the second patrol car, Flynn kicked out another window. Flynn received eight charges including DUI and two counts of escape. |
