School bus collision kills two

The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported two people died after an accident with a school bus at approximately 8:25 a.m. Thursday on Buckingham Road just south of Orange River Road in Fort Myers.

The driver of a black Honda northbound on Buckingham reportedly lost control of the vehicle while rounding a curve and went into the southbound lane where it was struck by a Lee County school bus.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit has assumed the investigation.

Both occupants of the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver has been identified as Elfego Mercado-Quintana, 28, of 5821 Buckingham Road No. 5, Fort Myers, and the passenger has been identified as Adrian Nunez-Romero, 30, of 5821 Buckingham Road No. 2, Fort Myers.

A driver and two school district employees were on the school bus at the time of the accident and none were seriously injured. The official cause of the accident is still under investigation.
