The Florida Press Association has named the Gasparilla Gazette, under Editor Terry O'Connor, the No. 2 weekly in the state for papers with circulations under 7,000.

The Navarre Press won the top spot in the General Excellence category followed by the Gazette.

Judges said the Gazette was: "Visually, a strong paper. Well laid out, good use of photos and good quality photos. Well written and each issue contains a lot of local information and color."

O'Connor also received an honorable mention for a health story about the use of jellyfish in combating strokes. "Localization of a national story makes it much more interesting to the newspaper readers," one judge wrote. "And it's done on the first six words!"
