The Boca Grande Camera Club is shooting for an even more successful second year when its shutters begin snapping again during the season beginning Nov. 16 and ending in April 2011.
The Boca Grande Camera Club will meet Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 this year followed by club gatherings Jan. 4 and 18, Feb. 1 and 15, March 1 and 15 and April 5 and 19 in the Woman's Club Room in the Boca Grande Community Center.
"More is being planned for the club," said co-founder Bob Elliott, who together with Dave Pearah spearheaded the first season's success. "There will be workshops in January, February and March; photographers from National Geographic and other publications; additional field trips and a session on Photos and the Computer."
Elliott said the mission is to educate and further member knowledge of digital photography and to exhibit to the Boca Grande community all the talent on the island.
The second annual Photo Exposition will be held in late January with at least 20 of the 65 members showing.
The membership began with roughly a dozen people drawn to Elliott and Pearah.
"I just decided we had a lot of good photographers on the island and I think the word got around," Elliott said. "Everybody takes pictures and most people soon find out other photographers aren't any better than they are."
Despite rainy cold weekend weather at the first exhibit, more than 600 people turned out to view the Valentine's weekend display.
An added bonus has been the club camaraderie, member Annnette Sophocles said. Photography can be an exercise in isolation.
"The people love the togetherness and the mutual love of photography," she said. "It's like a phenomenon. It's been a wonderful social outlet. It's a bonus - especially when you live on an island."
