Rule No. 1 in the second annual Pirate Poker Run is to have fun. It says so right in the rulebook. Rule No. 10 says the same thing. But there's a serious side, too, to the benefit for Meals on Wheels. The Englewood area senior service organization, which is not affiliated nationally, relies on the poker run for a good chunk of operating cash. The all-volunteer Meals on Wheels organization serves hundreds of meals six days a week. It partners with the Suncoast Humane Society to supply pet food, too. For those who've never done a poker run, this one has the added benefit of being accessible by land and sea. Contestants will start at Gasparilla Marina Waterside Grill or Royal Palm Marina and then collect cards at Stump Pass Grille, Johnny Leverock's Seafood House at the Palm Island Marina and the Fishery Restaurant in Placida. All are gorgeous venues with fantastic seafood and cocktails at special prices. There are prizes for best costume and a silent auction, too. Whoever picks up the hand with the five best cards wins a prize. Registrants need a $20 donation and can buy extra hands for $10 apiece. All completed hands must be turned into the Gasparilla Marina by 3 p.m. The first hand comes with goody bag and T-shirt (while supplies last). Additional hands, without goody bag or shirt, are just $10 each. Hands are fully tax deductible. The Leadership Englewood Class of 2010 has chosen to support the Pirate Poker Run. |
