Lisa Lee Rowe, 37, of the 1000 block on Dockside Place in Sarasota, turned herself into police this morning to answer charges she embezzled money from the North Port Chamber of Commerce. Rowe was employed by the NPCC from June 15, 2007, through January. She's alleged to have written 29 payroll checks to herself and deposited $22,860 into her personal Charlotte State Bank checking account. The Chamber provided copies of canceled checks written on the BB&T (formerly Colonial Bank) account of the North Port Chamber of Commerce after an independent auditor revealed possible discrepancies involving unauthorized payrolls checks made payable to Rowe. ECU detectives worked with North Port Police Department detectives in obtaining information for the investigation. Detectives subpoenaed Rowe's bank records, which included the payroll deposit slips. As administrative assistant, office coordinator and bookkeeper, Rowe was responsible for creating, issuing and dispersing payroll checks but not authorized to sign checks. Rowe turned herself in at 8:30 a.m. July 27. Bond was set at $7,500. |
