For Boca Grande, "Banyan Street" might still be the next movie filmed on Gasparilla Island if funding ever comes together.
The initial producer, Mary Thresher, was fired after missing a June 15 deadline to raise the estimated $500,000 needed to back the indie mystery thriller from Englewood author Jon Herbert.
Los Angeles-based commercial director Michael Kinney, 33, still plans to direct the film. He attended Englewood Elementary and L.A. Ainger Middle School with Herbert and they graduated together in 1995 from Lemon Bay High School.
Herbert, 34, said "Silver King," the book sequel to "Banyan Street," will come out in spring 2012 after being pushed back from a fall release. He remains confident Banyan Street will eventually reach the big screen.
"I do believe it will happen," Herbert said. "It's not dead by any means."
Kinney said it can take years to finance an independent production.
