707 pounds of medication destroyed

January 10, 2012
Gasparilla Gazette

Since "Operation Medicine Cabinet" began in June police have collected 707 pounds of expired or unused medications, said Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Cameron Monday.

CCSO has deposit boxes located at the District 1 Office in Englewood for Gasparilla Island residents to use, and the District 4 Office in Port Charlotte at Promenades Mall.

"The community support of this great program protects our young people from harmful misuse of prescription drugs; understand the needs of seniors, and the environmental implications related to the improper or unsafe disposal of medications," Cameron said.

Erin Hume, evidence unit supervisor and coordinator of Operation Medicine Cabinet said medications are accepted and secured into inventory until they get a court order to destroy them by incineration.

Call the District-1 Office in Englewood, 6868 San Casa Road, at (941) 475-9005.
