Brueggeman Memorial casts first 2012 grouper tourney lines

Tim Shaw landed the biggest fish at the eighth annual Capt. John Breuggeman Memorial Grouper Tournament at Cape Haze Marina Jan. 15 in the first fishing tourney of 2012.

Shaw took the aluminum wall trophy created by Rob Kozmits for biggest fish caught.

The Outcast crew won the tourney by catching 48.5 pounds with its three best grouper.

Capt. Glen Ballinger's Pelagic crew took a close second with 46.75 pounds and Capt. Travis Ormond's Feeding Frenzy crew landed third place with 45.25 pounds.

Reed Conley of Tampa was the raffle winner for the RTM fishing kayak donated by Action Watersports.

"The mission is to have to have fun day fishing, celebrate the life of John Breuggeman and provide scholarship monies to local college-bound students," said Caroline Brueggeman, tourney organizer and wife of the late competition namesake.

Seventeen vessels registered and 11 boats weighed in a total of 441 pounds of red grouper. A celebration barbecue of chicken and pork was held afterward for all anglers and guests.

Raffle included a fishing kayak, an offshore fishing trip, a back-bay fishing trip, a glider ride, an Okuma rod and reel, a fly rod outfit and an aluminum art piece.

The John and Caroline Breuggeman Scholarship Fund helps seniors at Lemon Bay High School with college expenses. Breuggeman created this fund in his wife's name after she retired frmo Englewood Elementary. His name was added post-humously.
