Former LBHS teacher passes at age 92

Dorothy Evelyn Rokes Garland passed away March 13.

Born Dec. 24, 1919, to Erving and Nellie Rokes of North Andover, Mass., she received a degree in education from Boston University, then continued her education at Northeastern and New Hampshire University.

She taught in Amesbury Mass., Newington and Rye New Hampshire Junior High Schools for 25 years before moving to Englewood in 1972 to enjoy her favorite pastimes - teaching and boating. taught for 17 years at Lemon Bay Junior and High School.

"Dottie" was active in the Englewood Moose Lodge 1933 where she achieved the Star Recorder and College of Regents degrees in Chapter 1582. In 1979 she was named Sweetheart of Lodge 1933 and was later known as "Mrs. Moose." For the past 19 years she served as "Mrs. Claus" at the annual Children's Christmas parties.

She is survived by four children: Robert Garland, Patricia Grant and George Garland all of New Hampshire; Victoria Garland, Englewood; and her four-legged faithful companion Sophie Mae. She also survived by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Englewood Moose Lodge 1933 at 2 p.m. April 22.

Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
