The case broke when CCSO received a call June 30 from an employee of the Mobile gas station, 13423 South McCall Road, who found two credit cards and two declined credit card receipts hidden in a beer cooler. The employee also found a purse in the trash can by the gas pumps. The victim was contacted and reported her purse was stolen out of her car that included her passport, driver's license, credit cards, $300 cash and a $4,000 gold and diamond engagement wedding ring.

Gas station surveillance video allegedly showed a man enters the gas station parking lot just before midnight June 30 in a white mini-van. He got out, discarded a purse in the trash can, and then entered the store. Video shows him using the ATM machine twice, and then going to the beer cooler. A BOLO was issued for the van and a description of the clothing he was wearing. Hayes was subsequently identified as the suspect.

Detectives then researched pawn shop transactions and reportedly discovered Hayes pawned a ring at King's Pawn II in Sarasota.

Hayes was moving out of his home on Boundary Boulevard in Rotonda West, to his new apartment on Manor Court. He gave consent to search the Boundary Boulevard home and detectives reportedly located some of the stolen property. They recovered the fishing equipment at his new apartment.

Hayes was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he remains on $48,000 bond.
