Gulf Coast Community Foundation has granted $394,453 in 316 scholarships to 196 students, including Peter Humbarger of Boca Grande.

Humbarger collected one of 17 Englewood Youth Foundation scholarships.

Other local scholars included Brittany Hill of Placida, who was given one of seven L.A. Ainger Junior High School Foundation scholarships.

Rotonda West graduates collected 24 scholarships and 66 Englewood students were honored with financial backing based on academic achievement. All local students, their scholarships and hometowns are listed below.

Gulf Coast provides financial assistance so students of all ages can go to an accredited postsecondary vocational school, two- or four-year college, or university. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation Scholarship Fund and more than 40 other charitable funds created by individuals, business and organization donors pays for the scholarships.

"Together with our donors, we strive to transform our region," said Teri Hansen, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Foundation. "Together, we directly invest in local students who can change their lives for the better through education."

Two Lemon Bay High School graduates - Paige McKenzie and Elizabeth Rigniey of Englewood - shared the new Robert E. Schill Nursing Scholarship.

"During his lifetime, Mr. Schill actually had his own life saved by a quick-thinking, proactive nurse, and he never forgot that," said Hansen. "What a legacy he has left through this permanent fund, which is helping others pursue a career that is critical to our region and was so important to him personally."

Gulf Coast awarded scholarships for health care studies from funds created by or in honor of health care professionals or focused on business, music, nonprofit management and other fields.

This is the 16th year that the foundation has provided scholarships. GCCF has invested more than $4.7 million in student scholarships.
