The goldfinch tends to breed later than most birds because they are more dependent on seeds, which are more common later in the summer season. This young male in the nest (photo on the left) is just getting the bright yellow and gold feathers with a black wing he will sport as an adult (photo on right). The baby will grow into the striking adult whose colors show strength and value as a mate to females, and an ability to defend his territory from rivals.
