Boca Grande ditch dilemma still festers

September 28, 2012
Gasparilla Gazette

The Gasparilla island Conservation & Improvement Association has been working with the Lee County Department of Transportation regarding the unsightly storm water retention system that runs on the east side of Gasparilla Road north of Loomis Street.

Lee County sent a crew to remove sludge from the ditch just before Tropical Storm Debby swept through June 27. Work was stopped for a few days due to complaints relevant to temporary storage of the removed material at the ball field off Wheeler Road.

The GICIA was the Lee County crew would complete the project during the next dry season when the ditch was not holding as much water.

The ditch has deteriorated significantly since then. Commissioner John Manning has asked an engineer to resolve the issue ASAP.
