‘Instructors of Art’ to practice what they teach

The Boca Grande Art Alliance exhibition of new works from 21 artists who are also instructors of the 2012-13 classes is now under way.

The Instructors' Art Show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

The exhibit features new artists with new skills on new mediums, said BGAA Executive Director Pike Powers.

All artists in the exhibit are experienced instructors who teach in the art education program running through April 2013.

Expert artist Julie Schwartz teaching the maritime art of Scrimshaw etching on ivory, and Scherenschnitte-fine paper cutting silhouettes.

Dianna Shandorf on paper marbling and hand-made book binding techniques.

Mosaic methods to create decorative flower pots taught by Pam Hannah and Marsy Doan.

Nautical Sailors' Valentines - an intricate fine assemblage of shells and beach findings - taught by Karen Irvin.

Jo-Ann Bateman is teaching introduction to glass fusing or melting mosaics of colorful glass to make small pieces to hang or wear.

Nationally recognized sculptor Richard Arnold, will teach two new classes in figure-sculpting clay.

An introductory fired ceramics class by Deborah Cooper with classes for children, parents and grandparents held during spring break.

Painting workshops for beginner, novice and established painters, include:

Advanced color mixing and watercolors in Tara Moorman's painting workshops.

International artists Gwenneth Barth White will teach pastel and oil painting of the figure from a live model.

Margaret Egli Thompson offers Impressionistic style oils (especially for the timid painter).

Plein-air, painting outdoors, and landscape painting classes offered by nationally known painters Bill Farnsworth, Karen Hitt, Maggie McClellan, Robert Simone and Ron Goulet.

"All take pleasure in capturing Boca Grande's stunning picturesque surroundings," Powers said.

The exhibit concludes with 15 free live demonstrations of artists at work in the gallery from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 11-12 during "Demo Days." Snacks will be served and you may register for classes on site. Artists demonstrations revolve on 2.5-hour morning and afternoon shifts Friday and Saturday.
