Lee County deputies involved in fatal shooting

January 4, 2013
Gasparilla Gazette

Lee County deputies apparently shot and killed a fleeing armed motorist today.

The deceased subject has been identified as Joseph Powell, 21, with a last known address of 12778 Vista Pine Circle, Fort Myers. The District 21 Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

At 1:55 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call about a disturbance in the parking lot near Cadillac Jacks at 16440 South Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41), Fort Myers. One caller advised a subject was armed with a gun. Another indicated shots had been fired.

It was reported several individuals physically fighting in the parking area in front of a large crowd.

Deputies were given vehicle descriptions of possible suspects leaving the area and police stopped one traveling south on U.S. 41 near Alico Road. A passenger reportedly ran from the car, armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with deputies.

He was fatally wounded. No deputies were injured in the encounter.

The investigation continues.

Deputies involved in the shooting are placed on modified duty as the State Attorney's Office reviews the case.

Southbound traffic at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Alico Road continues to be diverted in order to maintain the crime scene. It might reopen early this afternoon.
